More Frisky History!

November 3, 2010

Although San Francisco has always been a hub for liberal sexuality, in the 1970s things really started to take off for bisexuals. The Sutro was a bathhouse that admitted women as well as men; across the Bay, Barry and Shell’s swing house was wildly popular. The National Sex Forum, part of the Institute for Advanced Study for Human Sexuality, recruited some of its sex-ed movie participants from that scene. Even as we moved into the AIDS-blighted ’80s the SF Jacks were keeping their dicks hard and later in the decade that, too, went co-ed, with the Jack-and-Jill-Offs. Those parties happened at 890 Folsom — sadly, it’s no longer a sex space though it had been a home for not just the Jack and Jill Offs but also Queen of Heaven, several gay men’s clubs (including the Trough and the Blow Buddies) and a lesbian club that predated both Ecstasy and Club Cream. The space’s owners later established ClubEros. Some of the offspring clubs got their own spaces, while others wandered — Queen of Heaven met at 848 Community Space and art galleries for many years, among other locales (including the notorious Power Exchange) finally winding up, as did the Jacks and the Masturbate-a-Thon, at the Center for Sex & Culture. The Masturbate-a-Thon was invented at Good Vibrations, itself a child of the 1970s, and six years ago Robert and I made it into a live event as a fundraising project for the Center for Sex & Culture, bringing masturbation to the masses!
